In addition to basic educa­tion, the city has its own upper secon­dary school and adult educa­tion center, as well as excel­lent library, cultu­ral, and leisure services. There is also a vocatio­nal school in Nurmes.

The city has a versa­tile econo­mic struc­ture, with food, metal, and wood industries emplo­ying many residents.

Nurmes in Figures 

The market town of Nurmes was establis­hed on Decem­ber 5, 1876, and the rural munici­pa­lity of Nurmes was merged with the market town on January 1, 1973. Nurmes gained city status on January 1, 1974. On January 1, 2020, Nurmes and Valtimo united, making us bigger and stron­ger toget­her.
