Nurmes House, heart of culture

The city’s cultural services organize various cultural events and exhibitions, including the annual production of Nurmes Christmas Music. The main venue for Nurmes culture is Nurmes House, which includes a city library, Hannikainen Hall, and Tyko Gallery (map).

The Pielinen Karelia Music Institute operates in Nurmes House, providing musical education as part of the basic art education in Nurmes. The dance division of Nurmeksen Sepot Sports Association organizes dance education, with lessons mainly held in Palander Hall at Nurmes House.

Nurmes House also hosts the Upper Karelia Adult Education Centre, and the administration of the education service centre. An open Wi-Fi network is available in Nurmes House.

Designed by Arkkitehtitoimisto Helasvuo & Co., Nurmes House was inaugurated in January 1991. The beautiful lake and ridge scenery visible from inside is an essential part of the building’s architecture.

Elias Lönnrot Park is located next to Nurmes House, featuring a statue of Lönnrot donated by the Emil Cedercreutz Foundation in 2003.

City Library

The residents of Nurmes have always been enthusiastic library visitors, and the City Library consistently ranks well in national borrowing statistics. The city’s schools and day care centers nurture active library-goers, who are also well-served by the mobile library.

In addition to the collections in the library hall and reading room, there are two researcher rooms, customer computers, a scanner, a copier, a printer, and a Wi-Fi network available to patrons. You can study the local history of Nurmes by exploring the local collections and archives.

The multi-functional hall at Nurmes House boasts excellent acoustics, making it ideal for concerts, theater and dance performances, meetings, and lectures.
