The market town of Nurmes was established on December 5, 1876, and the rural municipality of Nurmes was merged with the market town on January 1, 1973. Nurmes gained city status on January 1, 1974. On January 1, 2020, Nurmes and Valtimo united, making us bigger and stronger together.
