The market town of Nurmes was established on 5 December 1876, and the rural municipality of Nurmes was attached to the market town on 1 January 1973. Nurmes gained the status of a city on 1 January 1974. Nurmes and Valtimo united on 1 January 2020 so now we are bigger and stronger together.
